Smart Consumption

ENERGY STAR AND THE PUERTO RICO ELECTRIC POWER AUTHORITY (PREPA)

Aligned with our mission, we partnered with ENERGY STAR to promote products with high energy efficiency to contribute to the protection of our environment. ENERGY STAR is a United States federal program that helps us save money and protect our environment, through efficient practices and energy products. The federal agencies that sponsor this program are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). There are more than 60 types of ENERGY STAR qualified products: lighting, refrigerators, A / C, washing machines, dishwashers, TV, "Home Theaters", DVD, etc. ENERGY STAR qualified products will give you a 10% to 50% reduction in consumption compared to standard models, they also reduce greenhouse gas emissions because they comply with strict energy efficiency regulations established by EPA and DOE. ADDITIONAL ADVICE

Vegetation
Take advantage of the outdoor vegetation to cool off and limit the use of the air conditioner.
Cooling
Adjust the cooling level of the refrigerators and freezers. We recommend 40F° for the refrigerator and not less than 0F° for the freezer.
Replace
Consider replacing the refrigerator if it is more than 10 years old, as new units are more efficient and use less energy.
Vegetation
Buy products with the Energy Star symbol.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS (CFB)

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. So you get the same lighting with a reduction in consumption.
  • Use natural light whenever possible.
AIR CONDITIONER

  • If you buy a window unit, choose one with an (EER) Energy Efficiency Ratio greater than 9.4.
  • If you buy a "mini split" unit, choose one that has the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) greater than 14 and EER greater than 11.5.

DRYER

  • Keep the dryer filter clean. Make sure it is clean before activating it.
  • Maintain adequate ventilation so clothes dry faster.
  • Limit its use and dry outdoors whenever possible.
HEATER

  • Install a time switch or "timer" to have hot water when you need it.
  • If you cannot install a "timer", use a pilot switch to turn it on 15 or 30 minutes before using the hot water and then turn it off.
  • Check the pipes and the valves. Leaks increase water and electricity consumption.
IRON

  • Do not leave the iron on when unused.
  • Iron first the clothes that need less heat.
  • Turn it off and use the remaining heat to finish ironing.
